Ant Farm Gel Colony
December 5th, 2010 by admin

Gel ant farms are simply one of many a whole bunch of spin-off from the space program. We have always considered space research as being a bit wacky. Ever because the Russians launched Laika the dog into area for no apparent reason (other than to get one over on the Americans) and since Alan Shepard used a six iron to hit a golf ball on the moon, we have been wondering what space research is all about.

Well, it turns out that ant farms also feature excessive on Nasa’s record of worthwhile experiments. Because the house program began there have been dozens of experiments devised to find how processes that rely on gravity, or are affected by gravity, operate when free of that ubiquitous force.

From seeing how unlucky spiders manage to spin webs to the rising of perfect crystals, they’ve all been tried. Some are profitable and a few aren’t. However that is science, of course.

The mystery of underground navigation

And one of these experiments was the now well-known Gel Ant Farm. Fairly how ants manage to construct and navigate their method by subterranean tunnels has always been something of a mystery. So, to attempt to discover exactly how they did it, scientists at NASA started a project to develop a transparent medium wherein ants would be capable of construct tunnels, just as in soil but, all-importantly, by which they is also seen really doing it.

The gel also wanted to be sufficiently stable to face up to the excessive G-forces associated with launch and re-entry. Any sand tunnel would collapse below these uncommon forces. Excessive G would not affect the ants, in fact, they’re simply robust enough to take such forces of their stride.

Up it went the Gel Ant Farm on an area shuttle and the ants started tunneling in their transparent gel. As I understand it, the tunnels had been a somewhat extra wiggly than ones made in the identical gel by the identical species on earth so gravity was thought to play a part in the ants’ subterranean efforts. But, so far as I do know, we did not find out much else.

Never mind though, the nice thing is that we now have a incredible choice of gel ant farms that are simply nice for teenagers to check and be taught from. Some individuals say that non-stick frying pans are the one good thing ever to come out of the house program – not so – we now have gel ant farms as nicely!
