Among several species of fish, shark is really one name that is well-known to majority of folks. Despite being a common specie, there are a number of facts about it that are hitherto unknown to humanity. This fish specie has a very fascinating biology together with several interesting details. Let’s shed some light on some unknown facts about this fish.

One of the lesser known facts about sharks is that they are cartilaginous fish. Put in simple words, it’s a specie whose body comprises of cartilages as against bones. It is not just the body that is made of cartilages, but the fins too are made of the same. Since this specie has fins made of cartilages, it cannot fold fins along their body in contrast to the other bony fishes.

Another less known fact about sharks is that they have teeth replacements. Shark has many rows of teeth well arranged in the mouth. Since every shark has any where between 5 to 15 teeth rows in each jaw, it never falls short of replacements.

Reproduction patterns fluctuate from one shark species to the next. While some of these fishes lay eggs; others give birth to shark calves. Certain shark species, even have a placenta which is comparable to that of humans and give birth to small shark babies instead of laying eggs. All shark reproduction is centered on internal fertilization.

It is a very popular notion that sharks are man eaters. In fact, in many conditions sharks have been held accountable for the death of humans. But, this is not always the case. Not all kinds of sharks are dangerous. As a matter of fact, it is only ten shark species out of the total four hundred types that can pose a risk to human beings. Sharks are known to attack only when they sense some threat or danger. Not every shark is a man eater, but all have sharp teeth, capable of inflicting injuries.

Sharks are also, one of the longest living species in the world. Although the accurate life expectancy of a shark isn’t yet known; on an average, the largest of the species is expected to live for upto 100-150 years. The smaller shark varieties usually have a life expectancy of about 25- 30 years.
